Georges Croegaert

(1848 - 1920 )

The artist was born in Antwerp and he spent his boyhood in Belgium. In 1880 he settled in Paris. Croegaert was mainly known for his paintings of cardinals, which he executed with a high degree of finish. He was one of the few artists allowed to enter the private apartments of the cardinals, where he painted them at work or leisure. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon before his death circa 1920. Croegaert’s portraits of Edwardian ladies of fashion were also extremely popular. They were painted with meticulous care and are important records of the style of that period.
