Robert Buhler was born in London on 23rd November 1916 to Swiss parents. He was educated in Switzerland but from 1934-36 Buhler returned to London to attend St. Martin’s School of Art and also The Royal College of Art where he had won a scholarship. Following his time at the RCA, Buhler took a studio in Camden Town, as well as doing some part-time teaching at Wimbledon Art School. From 1945 Buhler taught at the Chelsea School of Art alongside Henry Moore, whilst also exhibiting with the New English Art Club where he became a member the following year. 1946 was also the year that Buhler started showing at the Royal Academy and was finally elected R.A. in 1956. Buhler is best known as a painter of landscapes and portraits. He painted a number of well known people including Sir John Betjeman, W. H. Auden, Francis Bacon and Ruskin Spear. Buhler is known to have rented cottages in France and East Anglia and these were often the views that he favoured for his landscapes and beach scenes. Buhler’s easily identifiable style is one of restrained use of colour and geometric compositions. Bibliography: Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M.
