Walter W. Caffyn
(1845 - 1898 )
Walter Caffyn was born in Dorking, Surrey in 1845. He was one of the many excellent landscape artists of the Victorian period. His style is very typical of the time although few of his peers were as accomplished in their execution. He favoured scenes from his native Surrey, although he spent much of his time painting in neighbouring Sussex. Today he is best known for his river views, undertaken with a touch and feel only a local would have been blessed with. He achieved a certain amount of success during his own lifetime and was exhibited fairly extensively, with 26 works featuring at the Royal Academy and another 26 at Suffolk Street between 1876 and 1897.
